Fall at the Farm

October is here and fall is in full swing here on the farm. It is a time to reflect on the past growing season, and prepare for the new Spring season ahead. It was a good year for us, full of learning and love.

Our bee yard has expanded, and will be able to provide our community with fresh local honey next season. We have also added cut garden beds for fresh flowers next year. Lots of new additions for next year!

We have also expanded out produce gardens. Currently there is only a limited decorative pumpkins still available, but we are looking forward to having more extensive offerings next season.

There are a few more Thanksgiving Turkeys available for local purchase. Reach out for sizes and conditional delivery.

February is Flower Season

February in Ontario is not usually a time people associate with gardening or spring flowers. But for us at BFF, it’s crunch time. It’s the last bit of ‘slow time’ before the spring begins, and it’s when we put the finishing touches to this year’s garden and growing plans.

Over the next two weeks, we will be plotting out planting schedules and starting our seeds. We aim for our plants to be ready for the outdoors after Victoria Day, or the May 24 weekend. By this time, the danger of frost has usually passed where we are in South-Central Ontario, and our started plants and be transplanted outside safely.

February is when we start our herbs and garden flowers. Staples for us are Basil, Rosemary, Cilantro, Dill, and Parsley. Winter-hardy herbs like Thyme, Winter , and Sage are fine outside, but may require some gentle tending and light re-seeding in the spring after the ground thaws.

Starting to plant in February may seem a little early to some, but for being the shortest month, it always feels like it’s twice as long. Starting herbs and flowers around now helps make the last few weeks of winter seem a little brighter, and Spring a little closer. From Our Garden to Yours, Happy Planting!
